![]() Yet any doubts about Lin's originality are quickly dispelled once we get to the second setpiece, a boldly imagined art of mass destruction matched equally in its stunning execution. In chronological order, Lin begins with a grand introduction to Shaw and his gang with an intricately staged chase down the streets of London - although the fact that Shaw's military-styled vehicle looks like the Batmobile from Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy might provide a hint where Lin could have gotten his inspiration. Lin neatly - and we might add, beautifully - choreographs three elaborate chase sequences with loads of automobile destruction that the franchise has been known for, even more extraordinary for how he manages to top one after the next. But aside from an impressive bit of tag-team ass-kicking from Toretto and Hobbs against one of Shaw's equally hulk-sized crew (Kim Kold), the bulk of the action is meant to unfold against broad open canvases, as opposed to close quarters. Instead, both Carano and Taslim are there to add a different flavour of adrenaline in the form of close-combat fight scenes, and let's just say that they each get their own sequence to show off their respective moves. Of course, this isn't a movie with many such moments - except for the occasional expositions about family - so you can forgive the lack of character development for new supporting additions Riley (MMA fighter and 'Haywire' star Gina Carano) and Jah ('The Raid's' Joe Taslim) the former Hobbs' new partner and the latter Shaw's kungfu-kicking henchman. Once presumed dead, Toretto's former squeeze Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) has turned up as one of Shaw's known associates, a good part of the quieter moments of the film spent rekindling the romance between the ex-lovers. Amidst the crowded ensemble, Morgan picks up on a new angle set in motion from the concluding events of the last film. It is Hobbs who reunites Toretto's team together to pursue Shaw - the strategic equivalent of "fighting fire with fire" - with no less than the promise of full pardon if they succeed. Besides the budding romance between Han and Gisele (in our opinion, exotic and very nicely played) and the deepening of familial ties between O'Conner and Toretto's sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) with the birth of their child, there is sensibly the return of Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), which through the last film, transformed from dogged adversary to unlikely ally. Even as Morgan evolves the franchise, he understands that the character dynamics have been one of the highlights of each film, and this sequel to 'Fast Five' preserves and builds on the relationships that its predecessor established. As Tyrese Gibson's designated comic relief character Roman describes, Shaw's guys are pretty much the evil twins of Toretto's team, hence the return of other familiar supporting characters like Han (Sung Kang), Tej (Chris "Ludicrous" Bridges) and Gisele (Gal Gadot). That man is Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), an ex-SAS officer turned mercenary who leads a nefarious gang of criminals bent on stealing the components capable of assembling a lethal weapon to be used by terrorists. Continuing what began as an invigorating transition from streetcar racing to heist film the last time round, resident scribe Chris Morgan ups the stakes by pitting our favourite anti-heroes against their most dangerous opponent yet. Just when we feared that it might be difficult to top the jaw-dropping finale in 'Fast Five', director Justin Lin proves that he has reserved his best one yet for what has been announced as his final outing at the helm after four consecutive runs. ![]() ![]() Really, how many franchises can claim to be at their best the sixth time round? But that is exactly where the 'Fast and Furious' team are at with this exercise in pure exhilaration. ![]() ![]() ![]() The art of the period has come to be appreciated as a subtle, multi-layered, and learned response to an array of stimuli springing from the political and cultural complexities of the times. Intellectually, our appreciation of the visual culture that developed in Britain and Ireland has advanced and matured considerably in recent times thanks to a number of important scholarly contributions, 1 so that rather than a stagnant “Dark Ages”, the early Middle Ages are now widely perceived as interesting times of change and development. However, as shall be argued, there is far more than looks to the early coins, and indeed more than aesthetic concerns when considering them. In truth, if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it must be admitted that very often considerable effort is necessary in order to begin to perceive their “iconography”, let alone “beauty”. The apparent clumsiness of execution of early coins commonly engenders amused curiosity, if not bafflement, especially when they are compared to Greek, Roman, or later medieval specimens, which more readily match classically trained visual sensibilities. The richly imaginative and creative art of Anglo-Saxon England requires equal testing and stretching of traditional models of aesthetics. It must be conceded that people unfamiliar with the period may find their conventional notions of aesthetics uncomfortably challenged when beholding early coinage. They did so in a manner that was visually interesting, pleasing, and intellectually stimulating. ![]() It will become apparent that, although simply reproducing some passable imitations could have been an option, the true merit of Anglo-Saxon coin-makers is to be found in their active response to the challenge of having to fit in with established models while making sure that their creations remained meaningful in their own culture. This chapter will explore the ways in which the Anglo-Saxons rose to the challenge of establishing their own independent coinage, as well as the ways in which conceptual drives and resonances directed their iconographic choices. Much depends on our definition of art – which, for the purpose of this work, will be concerned on the one hand with creative responses and the translation of abstract concepts in the coins, and on the other with their intellectual significance. The first question we may want to address is whether we are at all justified in exploring these coins through the lens of art, as opposed to regarding them as interesting archaeological/antiquarian artefacts. In an age of ambition and complexity, with a richly diverse visual vocabulary to be drawn on, such a creative response makes “art in the round” an apt label for Anglo-Saxon coins. ![]() In the light of the tumultuous changes of the period in question and the tension between the weight of tradition on one hand, versus the drive towards innovation, creativity, and experimentation on the other, it will offer an overview and commentary concentrating in particular on what shaped the all-important visual elements which were drawn on as sources and signifiers of power, including inscriptions. Through the discussion of a number of case-studies, the aim of this chapter is to consider the development of early Anglo-Saxon coinage in the crucial period between the 7th and 8th centuries by focusing on the exploration of iconographic choices as artistic responses to specific political and commercial needs within a particular historical, cultural, and social context. The relationship between money and art is therefore a pivotal one to examine in a volume that explores the roles that money and coinage play in society. and minted to very precise weight standards, are powerfully characterized by the protome of a roaring lion, a symbol of the issuing authority. The electrum coins from Lydia, dated to the 7th century B.C. Reflecting on the intellectual leap of imagination achieved in the transition from weighing bullion to trusting coins, it is the iconography that acts as guarantor of fair play and that expresses authority, as is apparent from the earliest coins known. We take it for granted that coins bear images, but we rarely stop to think what an intimate connection actually exists between money and art: it is the design hammered into a blob of metal that turns it into a coin. ![]() ![]() ![]() With its rich history and legendary status, Opus One is truly a bucket-list wine for any serious collector or enthusiast. The wine has consistently received high scores from the world's leading critics, and its 2004 vintage was named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year. The wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels beore being released for sale.Įach year, Opus One releases a limited number of bottles – just over 6,000 cases in 2015 – making it one of the most coveted wines on the market. Founded in 1979 by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Opus One produces a single wine each vintage – a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Thanks for the scores Andy! Interesting to see how high 2001 is.Opus One, located in Oakville, California, is one of the world's most celebrated wineries. Bizarrely there’s something more Margaux than Mouton about this. The alcohol sits completely within the framework of the wine and the finish is both lifted and pure. There’s the freshness of a cooler year allied to impressive ripeness of fruit and a finely-spun texture. On the palate this is absolutely seamless - the fruit is sweet, but precise, and well defined and the tannins are beautifully sculpted. Lots of nuance and complexity and it keeps evolving and changing in the glass. The aromas are decidedly ‘cool’ with floral elements, sweet French oak and fresh tobacco alongside intense blackcurrant. RE the 2016, I had a sample sent to me at home last year:Ī wine of striking finesse and elegant proportions. In terms of older vintages, I’m a big fan of 1991, 19. Recent vintages have been delicious - isn’t Michael Silacci still making it? - plus it’s accessible in terms of being able to buy it, whereas many top CA wines are not for us Europeans, and (wearing my ITB hat) it’s priced at a level that makes it commercially very successful. I reckon Opus is pretty successful all round. Jane Anson, Sept 2019: Decanter – 19 Sep 19 The 97/99 are still a bit on the younger side.Ĭheck out more recent Cellartracker scores for these vintages to see that the hype is real here:īest Opus according to Cellartracker in the past 2 years:Īnother hint at the greatness of these wines comes from two vertical tastings Jane Anson of Decanter (in my eyes, one of the most reliable critics) and La Revue Vins France: I would go for the the 96, 91, 94, 95 vintages (in that order) as these vintages are ready and full of tertiary aromatics. I just hope that the more recent vintages will age like those from the 90s and before. I’ve had the 1994, 1996, 1997 several times over the past 24 months and put it into several blind tastings and it always delivered great results and very high scores and even though it’s a tad sweeter it was often confused with a great aged Bordeaux from a riper vintage. If one was to try a somewhat older vintage of it as I prefer some age on my cab, what vintage do you guys suggest? Thanks! I know Opus One gets a bad rap, but I still want to try it given that I really love Mondavi Reserves and generally enjoy California Cabs. However I do find myself buying Dujac for similar magnitudes. I have a few Opus tucked away, older, waiting for a day. RE: Burgundy, people go monkey shit me included to be honest. If you love it, you will seek it out and buy it. I’ll just add that QPR is in the eye of the beholder. Hard to find any under $300 currently, but I’ll have to continue looking! ![]() I think it has to do more with QPR and current prices. I may have been unfair calling it getting a bad rap. Last one I had was before their involvement, which I believe was somewhere around 2005. It’s gone through some changes and I’m not sure who’s making it since Constellation got involved. At the time it was around $100, which was high, but didn’t make it particularly out of line, since a lot of other wines were hitting that price. And I admit, I was one.īut then I tried it one day and thought it was actually pretty decent stuff. Then a lot of wines came out that were every bit as good and not as expensive. It was a big loud project initially, and it was a costly wine for the time. Mike - I don’t know that it really gets a bad rap, but it is a confusing wine. ![]() ![]() ![]() ”There was even a time in 2018 when I was advised NOT to create any more recruitment videos because we were completely full. ”I learned long ago that by using pop culture or trending references and providing a unique ‘out of the box’ approach when it comes to advertising our police department on social media, it has provided more positive engagement and even national, sometimes international, recognition for our police department,” Perez said. Facebook was a different beast back then with music rights, etc.,” Uptmore said. ”He gave me tips and tricks, and I saved his number. While you mainly see negative things on the news about police officers, there’s a ton more good than bad … and police work is hilarious.”Īs he built Southlake’s social identity, Uptmore reached out to Perez, who had been producing his own brand of videos since 2015, including a series of FWPD videos in the vein of “Star Wars” that caught Uptmore’s attention. ”This job ages you mentally, so I was able to have self-awareness and recognize that I need to remember I’m a person too, not just a cop. “I worked for Dallas PD for 10 years, so really not falling into that trap of becoming jaded and disgruntled became a huge goal. ”When I was a younger officer, I never wanted to lose the fun, creative side of me, which was tough with the amount of things you deal with daily on the job,” said Uptmore, a film major at Baylor. This has paid off in the many views their departments are receiving via social media and, most recently, with each winning a pair of the nation’s most prestigious video awards. In Fort Worth, PIO Brad Perez specializes in “out of the box” presentations. In Southlake, Public Information Officer Brad Uptmore began a campaign of “humanizing the badge” when he came on board five years ago. ![]() Unlike many departments that take a more sober tack in their delivery, these departments eliminate “cop talk.” Instead, they have replaced it with a less formal, more relaxed approach to communication, all the while still getting a serious message across.
